Abnormal Proventriculus in Bumble Bee Males
نویسندگان
چکیده
Females social insects are widely investigated, while males often neglected. Previous work on the morphology of bumble bee male alimentary tract has described presence swollen proventriculi as a character with taxonomic value. New observations suggest that abnormal proventriculus might be an condition. Here, I identify potential health issue in (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus) tracts consists and strongly melanized proventriculus, thereby preventing normal passage food through esophageal valve. Males from three species exhibited overall prevalence 31.1% across two years. This finding challenges previous research suggested Bombus character.

Drastic historic shifts in bumble-bee community composition in Sweden.
The species richness of flower-visiting insects has declined in past decades, raising concerns that the ecosystem service they provide by pollinating crops and wild plants is threatened. The relative commonness of different species with shared ecological traits can play a pervasive role in determining ecosystem functioning, but information on changes in abundances of pollinators over time is la...
متن کاملBumble bee parasite strains vary in resistance to phytochemicals
Nectar and pollen contain diverse phytochemicals that can reduce disease in pollinators. However, prior studies showed variable effects of nectar chemicals on infection, which could reflect variable phytochemical resistance among parasite strains. Inter-strain variation in resistance could influence evolutionary interactions between plants, pollinators, and pollinator disease, but testing direc...
متن کاملMaternity-related plasticity in circadian rhythms of bumble-bee queens.
Unlike most animals studied so far in which the activity with no circadian rhythms is pathological or linked to deteriorating performance, worker bees and ants naturally care for their sibling brood around the clock with no apparent ill effects. Here, we tested whether bumble-bee queens that care alone for their first batch of offspring are also capable of a similar chronobiological plasticity....
متن کاملInbreeding in Mimulus guttatus Reduces Visitation by Bumble Bee Pollinators
Inbreeding in plants typically reduces individual fitness but may also alter ecological interactions. This study examined the effect of inbreeding in the mixed-mating annual Mimulus guttatus on visitation by pollinators (Bombus impatiens) in greenhouse experiments. Previous studies of M. guttatus have shown that inbreeding reduced corolla size, flower number, and pollen quantity and quality. Us...
